Barbara's Diary - Week 6

Day 36 - Thursday 24th April 2003

As I was lying in bed I closed my left eye and was actually able to blink my right eye by itself. That is a major improvement!

Day 37 - Friday 25th April 2003

When my friends saw me, they all said I was much improved. That makes me feel encouraged that maybe this WILL go away. I don't know when, but I do know I will be all right....

Day 38 - Saturday 26th April 2003

Day 39 - Sunday 27th April 2003

Left the tape off and drove my car just around the neighborhood! It felt good!!!

Day 40 - Monday 28th April 2003

Saw the eye doctor again and he said there were more dry spots. I told him I've been trying to leave the tape off, so that I can do more things on my own, but he said I'd be taking a chance on damaging the cornea. According to him, this is going to last many more months and I have to keep the eye lubricated and taped. This is not good news. If this is so, I will probably cancel my cruise with my sister, Lillian in July. I don't want to go with one eye. Hopefully, I will recover fully, and be able go another time. In the meantime, I will keep fighting this thing. I am lucky this is not life-threatening. For the time being, it is simply a royal inconvenience!

Day 41 - Tuesday 29th April 2003

Despite what the eye doctor said, I drove to the market myself. Sandy is not a good shopper and hates supermarkets. This is what I did: I got into the car, started the engine and took off the tape. I drove the short distance to the store, and as soon as I turned off the engine, put more ointment in my eye and replaced the tape. I did my shopping and then did the same thing again: took it off to drive home, and then replaced it. (Only one problem: it takes a while sometimes to get it right. My lashes get caught in the tape and it's a nuisance.) Later that day Sandy drove me to the airport to meet my sister, Lillian who arrived on the shuttle from D.C. When she looked at me, she couldn't imagine what my mouth must have looked like when I first came down with RHS. She said my smile is almost normal, which makes me feel better.

Day 42 - Wednesday 30th April 2003

Lil and I met my friend Ellen and the three of us took the LI Railroad train to Manhattan for lunch and theater. It felt good to be back in the city and doing things I normally do. "The Play What I Wrote" was great fun and we had a most enjoyable day. But due to the RHS, I was more tired than usual when we finally got home again.
