Nikunj's Diary - Week 3

Day 15 - Friday 22nd August 2003

Seems like my face and pain is getting stable. Feel little better. No improvements in bells palsy. Blisters inside ear canal are getting better. Relieve constant pain around ear. There are occasionally thumbing and pulsing earache and headache around ear. Neck pain is getting worse. I cannot keep my head straight and lifted up for more time. I get dizzy.

I am still taking 400 mg Acyclovir, 5 times a day, Vitamin B complex and reduce dose of MethyIPREDNISolone.

My eye gave me lot of trouble today. Even I have put ointments and eye-drops constantly in my eye and covered with cotton balls, I was awake throughout a day either to TV or on computer. Didn't sleep whole day and feel much energetic for a long time. Worked on computer and backup all digital pictures. Whenever I blink my left eye, right eye covered with cotton balls get pressure from cotton balls to stay close and that seems to trouble me in the evening. Eye corona was red and watery throughout evening.

Visited by friends and family. I was able to talk to them and felt like my mouth is not getting tired. I wanted to welcome them and talk to them. This was nice and refreshing feeling since I love to hang around with friends.

Watch movie and had a fun with my one year old. I wasn't feeling tired but lay down on couch with either closed eye. Friends leave and I went to bed around 1.00 AM.

Day 16 - Saturday 23rd August 2003

Woke up around 9.00 AM. It was very pleasant sleep.

Checked my eye and it is still red. If I keep it uncovered with eye ointment, I feel better but it looks blurry. I decided to keep it covered after breakfast and lay down on sofa to relieve eye pain and eye redness. I had very severe neck pain and I have noticed that I keep my head little lilted towards left side because of neck pain. I covered both my eye and took rest in the morning.

I am big time Hollywood and Bollywood movie fan. Watched movie and stayed home throughout day. Try to keep eye uncovered in afternoon. I can keep my eye wide open with ointment or eye drops and it wasn't itchy. That give me more relieve in eye pain.

Seems like there was liquid in right side of sinus. It was drifting through my nose whole afternoon. I cannot remove through sneezing since I wasn't able to sneeze well. I was cleaning liquid thorough paper napkin.

Tired by the time of evening and went to bed early.

Day 17 - Sunday 24th August 2003

Woke up around 9.00 AM. It was very pleasant sleep again.

Eye was still red. There are no improvements in bells palsy. Did some facial exercise. There are occasionally some throbbing and pulsing behind ear. I do feel more energetic. If I talk too much then feels like my mouth muscles are swollen and tired.

Found out something new in my mouth. There is acidy test in right side of my mouth and saliva taste like some sweet savory juice.

Took rest throughout day. Lay down on sofa with eye covered and closed in the evening and let mind rest for a while. Even I don't do anything, I can feel difference and much more improvement by lying on sofa.

Day 18 - Monday 25th August 2003

Come back at work. My manager also came back from two-week vacation. We have met first time after I diagnosed RHS and it was very shocking news for him.

I still feel like my head is spinning quite a bit and have to frequently rub my right eye. My head still feels quite achy at times too.

Since we were at the deployment stage of our project, I had to talk to manager about open issues and work needs to be done to finish project. I discuss about my condition and project all together for more than half an hour and it was very painful. After I am done talking, I realized that my facial muscles are swollen and sore. It was tiring. There were lots of voice mails from friends and colleagues regarding my condition. I have preferred to email instead of calling them and I hope they will appreciate it.

There were still headache, earache, neck pain, and acidy test in mouth and but Overall, It was very refreshing and energetic day. I was able to concentrate on work.

Since I am a computer software developer, I have to work with monitor. I can keep my eye wide open and still it wasn't tiring. I put ointment and eye drops once in a while but it was much better than last time I was at work. I was able to open my eye without blinking. It wasn't dry and itchy so, I keep it open and didn't cover with cotton balls and patch. I am not sure whether its good idea or not.

Printed out couple diaries from Rob's web site, Martin's diary was much similar to my case. After reading Greg's diary, I am definitely sure that if doctor had given me Acyclovir at initial stage then I would recover very quickly. I was begging for Acyclovir because I had done research on web and study paper shows that Acyclovir along with prednisone provides best result than prednisone alone but doctor insisted to leave me on prednisone alone because there is no medical proof that Bells Palsy caused by any virus. Well, I believe he was wrong since my bells palsy was caused by RHS, which further caused by varicella-zoster virus. At last, I was diagnosed as victim of RHS and finally they gave me Acyclovir but I think it was too late. I had tingling and vibration at the beginning of first week. Since RHS struck me, I had occasional tingling, vibration or muscle movements. I am not sure tingling and vibrations are part of recovery or degenration but if it was recovery then real damage was done end of first week because of virus infection and whole recovery process was halted.

Worked full day. Driving back to home was little tough. It was hot and humid Chicago summer. I didn't have any pain but since I keep all AC vents on me, I was little sleepy.

Went home and had a nice dinner. Lay down on sofa, watched movie, and Monday night football preseason game. It was quite relaxing.

At bedtime, I have noticed while looking at mirror that my right side cheek muscles below eye are responding when I smile and same thing my forehead muscles are responding when I frown. Noticed that I could raise my eyebrow on the affected little more. There are no wrinkles on forehead yet but it seem like it will form soon because all forehead muscles are trying to respond when I frown. I haven't noticed whether those muscles where responding or not during first week of bells palsy so, I am not sure whether its imagine or improvement in facial muscles. There wasn't any tingling or vibration so, I cannot say. Went to bed around 10.00 and felt like normal weekday.

Day 19 - Tuesday 26th August 2003

Woke up feeling headachy and the pain behind my ear stayed until get at work. I been sleeping well for a while and that shows up in my body. I am reacting well and feel like much more normal person. During normal morning activities, bath, breakfast and driving, I was feeling constant throbbing behind ear.

No more improvement in bells palsy condition. Acidy test in right side of my mouth is still out there. At work, everybody knew my condition so, they try to talk to me as less as possible. Its good to have understanding manager and colleagues and I guess I am lucky here. There were some occasional pain around ear but overall it was another nice day.

There are still some dry crusts of blisters in ear but it wasn't painful. It does itchy sometimes but I try to avoid touching that area. I have still very sore neck.

I have again tried to keep my eye open with ointment and eye-drops. I been wearing glasses since I have bells palsy so, there wasn't any problem for debris at clean computer desk. It's been second day and I can keep my eye wide open without itching and dryness. I think it was useful and eye is getting better and its becoming white at every moment and hurting less. I am sure because I had a right eye covered with patch over weekend and eye lid was trying to blink when my left eye blink, I was putting lot of pressure on eye and that's why it was red and hurting.

I was feeling little soreness and swollen muscles around my right cheek. I was able to eat and speak fairly well. Even there is no visual difference in my face, I can drink and eat much more freely then ever. I am still chewing food thorough my left side. I cannot chew on right side otherwise I can easily loose control over piece of food. Eat lots of fruit, vegetables, rice, grains and pasta today and seems like I am developing right diet for my body. I am still taking Acyclovir, MethyIPREDNISolone and Vitamin B complex.

Day 20 - Wednesday 27th August 2003

Bad night. Could not sleep well. I woke up around midnight because of throbbing pain behind ear.

Went to work but I still had pain behind ear. I had headaches for last couple days but this pain was like my nerve is still swollen. I had consult with my doctor and he told me to go home and take rest. He told me that steroid I am taking will help to reduce inflammation of nerve but I have to take rest to subside pain and faster recovery. My face was swollen and my right side of head was heavy.

I took rest of the week off. I came home and lay down on couch throughout afternoon and evening. Throbbing behind ear was gone. Felt some vibration in lip and tingling on forehead. I have noticed more wrinkles on my forehead in affected area. Its still same as other side but its coming along. I have one big wrinkle and 5-7 other small wrinkle on my forehead. I can see the center is shaping up on affected side and some smaller ones are trying to come out. My wife also noticed that my facial muscles are responding better when I smile or talk.

You can notice that there are little improvements on forehead and eyebrow area. You can compare this picture with Day 7, Picture 1. I can raise my eyebrow little bit. Can you see one big middle wrinkle and some small ones on forehead? If you can't see it then its because of artificial light, but it is there.

Smile is still same. Its amazing how small nerve looses control of some facial muscles and you are not able to smile.

Check out face without any expression. Don't I look good?

One more picture with my daughter. She is having fun with daddy.

Day 21 - Thursday 28th August 2003

Nice morning. I had a very quite and pleasant sleep. Woke up around 10.00 AM. No headaches and earache. There was neck pain but it was much less than used to. It was last day of Acyclovir and Methyprednisolone.

I went to video store to pick up some video and I have spent nearly an hour on video store. I think that wasn't good idea because my headache and throbbing behind ear was started again. I came back home and lay down on couch rest of the afternoon.

There weren't any improvements in bells palsy condition. I have noticed that there weren't any improvements on forehead too. There was once 3-4 second vibration on lip.
