Day 22 - Friday 29th August 2003 |
Bad night. Woke up around 3.00 AM because of throbbing pain around ear. I think my nerve is still swollen. I couldn't sleep well. |
Woke up and called up doctor to get advice on pain. He suggested taking more steroids. I will do anything to reduce nerve swollen because there might be chances of permanent damage of nerve and facial paralysis condition. He put me one more round of prednisone to reduce swollen of nerve and at the same time he suggested that I should be 100% resting otherwise steroid alone won't help. He put me 40 mg for 1-3 days, 20 mg for 4-6 days and 10 mg 7-9 days. He strictly told me to rest my head as more as possible to help reduce swollen 100% and even I feel better, try to rest as much as possible. |
There was some occasional vibration and tingling on lip, forehead, and cheek muscles after I took prednisone around late afternoon. |
Day 23 - Saturday 30th August 2003 |
I had pleasant sleep last night. Woke up around 9.00 AM. No headaches and earaches. Seems like steroid help reducing throbbing pain behind my ear. |
As doctor suggested, stayed home throughout day and try to take rest as much as possible. I am still putting ointment in my eye and keep eye open. I don't cover my eye with patch except nighttime. My eyelid does blink little bit but I still cannot close my eye totally. |
I have noticed that center wrinkle on my forehead is propagating to affected side of forehead. I have also noticed that my smile is getting little better. My facial muscles are on affected side are responding much more when I smile. I can eat and talk much more without exhausting my facial muscles. My cheek muscles are not sore and painful. My family says my face is getting better but I would say my condition is getting 10-20% better. |
Watched couple movies and games. Lay down on sofa for rest of the day and I believe that helped me to build strength in my body. Even I go out for more than half an hour, I feel throbbing pain again and get exhausted and dizzy very quickly. |
Day 24 - Sunday 31st August 2003 |
I have been sleeping well since last couple days. I am having no headaches, earaches and pain behind my ear. I believe its because of prednisone and rest I am taking. I am still having neck pain but much less compare to last Thursday and Friday. If I sit long enough then neck pain stretches to lower back and giving me lot of trouble. |
Anyway, there was house-warming party at my one of close friend. All of my friends, relatives and family members were going to get together. Even I feel much more strength in my body, I can talk, and I have tried to avoid going there. I don't want to loose any strength I have gained in last couple days. I have preferred to stay home and rest my head instead of going to party, explain to everybody what happened to me. It might be really hard for me to stand and talk to other people for whole day. I am sure I would be exhausted within couple hour and there won't be any place for me to take rest. I hope my friend will understand it. |
I have having constant tingling on muscles below my lower lip. If I close my eye, I can feel some tingling on muscles below my eye. |
I took nap around afternoon after my family left for the party. Since I was alone at home, I turn off TV and lay down on sofa. I sleep nearly three hours and I felt really great when I woke up around 4.00 PM. I had lot of twitching on facial muscles in the evening especially right side of the lips. |
While I was eating dinner around 7.00 PM, I have noticed that I can eat almost perfect. I can chew food on affected side. I do not loose food while I am chewing on affected side. I can move food from one side to other side easily without loosing control. That was amazing improvement since I know I wasn't able to eat lunch during afternoon. This is just 4-5 hour difference and recovery in short period while I was sleeping was unbelievable. |
Day 25 - Monday 1st September 2003 |
Had another bad night. Couldn't sleep well. I think its because of prednisone I been taking since last three days. I have reduced my predinose dose to 20 mg a day for next three days. I didn't have any throbbing pain around ear. I still have neck pain. I didn't have any other problem. |
Another amazing improvement was my smile. I have noticed that I could smile much better. I think it's because of twitching of facial muscles on right side of lip I had yesterday. I had visitors around evening and I was able to talk to them much more fluently. Another thing I have noticed that I am OK with the noise around me. I remember even small noise or little louder TV volume was bothering me couple days ago. Friends visited me and noticed that I have improved a lot since they visited me last time. I had a nice dinner and I believe my eating ability is getting better every moment. If I rinse my mouth, I still loose water so; rinsing ability is still not recovered. |
Day 26 - Tuesday 2nd September 2003 |
Had another bad night. Couldn't sleep well. I think it's because of prednisone again. I believe rest during last week and long weekend helped me to recover much quickly. Once again, no pain behind ear, No headaches. There is a neck pain but it's not that severe. I don't have to rest my head on anything to relieve neck pain. No back pain at all. I had severe nerve throbbing pain behind my ear on Friday and doctor put me on steroid (prednisone) again for short period so, pain has been subsiding. Since then, I have been recovering remarkably. |
About RHS, My facial muscles are firm and 25-30% recovered. My smile is 30-40% recovered and most remarkable improvement is eating. I can clean my tongue almost perfect without any cramps on jaw. I can eat and chew food on affected area and that's been almost perfect. I would say eating 80-90% recovered. I speech is 80-90% recovered and I don't get tired. Forehead wrinkles are 25-30% recovered and I am able to see couple more glimpse of wrinkles. Wrinkles are not same as non-affected side but you can see that it's trying to form on affected side. Every day I am feeling better. My smile still looks funny but I am getting there. I am still not able to close my eye fully and to blink properly. I am still very sensitive to light. I still wear sunglasses to avoid direct sunlight. I can raise eyebrow almost perfect and same as non-affected side. |
I was back at work. Everybody was happy to see me and noticed improvements on my face. I was able to concentrate on work and felt like normal day. I didn't have any headaches or throbbing behind ear. |
While I was going back home, I had constant twitching on forehead and cheek. It is funny feeling like science fiction movies. Some of the muscles movements on forehead were really strange. You can feel the vibration from right side of forehead to left side of forehead. After dinner, I had a constant twitching and vibration on upper side of lip on affected area. This one was like some invisible force is pulling your lip and trying to open your mouth. I told Rita that it feels like someone is pulling my lip and she said that see couldn't see it. This is amazing experience to feel how nerve regain control over muscles. I was exhausted and took little nap during evening time. |
Very nice picture and pleasant surprise. Isn't it? Its been three days and I am on my way back to complete recovery. Look at my face and compare with Day 12, Picture 1. You can even notice my overall face is getting better. |
You can notice that I can raise my eyebrow almost perfect. Compare it with Day 20, Picture 1. Look at wrinkles on forehead. Now, you can see it even in artificial light. |
Wow! I can smile. It's still not perfect but getting better. Compare it with Day 20, Picture 2 |
Very cute smile with mouth closed. Compare it with Day 7, Picture 2 |

Is anybody saw wrinkles on forehead in second picture? Check it out in bright day light. |

Another look of my smile in day light. |
Day 27 - Wednesday 3rd September 2003 |
Had another bad start of bedtime. Couldn't sleep well for first couple hours. I still feel fresh because I am still getting 7-8 hour sleep. Once I am done with prednisone by end of this week, I will be OK. |
No headaches while waking up. I still have neck pain. No noticeable improvements in bells palsy but face is getting better and stronger. If there are any improvements in facial muscles, it could be in millimeter so; it's hard to gauge day-by-day improvements. I can see more wrinkles on forehead. As I said earlier, eating and taking almost perfect. My smile is getting better each day. |
There is still one dry blister crust in ear and its not hurting at all. I am sure it will come out in coming days. |
Around afternoon, occasional throbbing pain behind ear. Since I am not resting my head at work, I believe I will have throbbing pain for next couple weeks until swollen nerve heal completely. I am surprised to see that colleagues, who don't know about my condition, couldn't notice any difference on my face. Since I know myself better, I can say I haven't recovered more than 50%; still they didn't have any idea about my condition. |
There was some constant vibration on forehead muscles while I was driving back to home. Exhausted by end of the day especially non-affected side of eye. My eyes and facial muscles felt tired. I had an occasional migraine pain behind ear in the evening. It's same as throbbing pain of swollen nerve. I went to bed early around 9.30 AM. Did not fell in sleep right away but I was very happy to lie down on bed and relax my body, eyes and especially head. |
Day 28 - Thursday 4th September 2003 |
Had another bad start of bedtime. Couldn't sleep well for first couple hours. I am not sure what's going on. I am still getting enough sleep to start fresh another day. Woke up bit headachy. There was throbbing pain behind ear throughout day. |
During morning activities, I have noticed that I can rinse my mouth much better. I have also noticed lot more wrinkles on forehead. It was same part of forehead where I was feeling vibration yesterday and some glimpse of wrinkles I was able to see couple days ago. My smile is almost 75% better. I can grimace almost 80-90% perfect. I felt occasional tingling on cheek and jaw muscles in morning. My eyes are still same and I am keep putting ointment and eye drops regularly. |
I have gained almost 5 more pounds since bells palsy struck me. You can easily see the difference on my face. My face got chubbier in last four weeks. I have been stuffing a lot and do not workout at all. Either I am laying down on couch, sleeping on bed, driving in car or sitting in front of computer, I am not doing any physical activities to make sure my body get rest what its needed. |
Around evening, I was watching NFL kick-off game. I fell in sleep around half time. I was very exhausted and tired around 9.00 PM and I have know idea when did I fell in sleep. I was exhausted without any reason. My affected side of head was very heavy and couldn't able to keep eye open. Since I cannot close my eyes during nighttime, I am still patching it during nighttime. |
Well, Raising eyebrows getting better each passing day. You can notice my face is getting chubbier. |
My smile is getting better. You can notice one teeth on right side. Compare it with Day 26, Picture 3 |
Almost picture perfect. Can you tell I struck by BP? I bet you can't. |
Try to make grimace look. Looks more like smile with closed mouth. You can notice both side of muscles are moving 75% symmetrical. |
