Rob's Diary - Week 10

I managed to get back to work last week and take up a number of important leads. This, inevitably, left me quite tired through the duration of the week, not just because of the workload but because I am still fighting to keep upright! Although things are much better now, I am still reliant upon the local taxi service to get around.

The earache is a very minor problem now both in intensity and in frequency. I hope this will disappear altogether when the illness is finally beaten because there is a risk of long term ear problems even after recovery from RHS.

There wasn't a lot of improvement to the facial muscles last week but I was expecting this anyway with only the lip and cheek areas showing signs of damage. These may well be long term ailments.

Once more my goal this week is driving!

Day 64 - Wednesday 9th April 2003

Spent a good few hours at work today and again my balance seems to be better. There were a couple of incidents which made me realise that I'm not fully recovered but I'm positive it will be soon.

Day 65 - Thursday 10th April 2003

Got an email from Janine (check out her diary too) who said she was had just started driving again after 7 weeks 'timeout' through RHS. I'm determined to give it shot this weekend. She has inspired me!

Day 66 - Friday 11th April 2003

Went on site today to check out some of the work being carried out. Although the place is still a bit of an obstacle course I managed to navigate it without stumbling too much.

The main area of improvement in the RHS is the visual aspect. I am seeing things more clearly now without the strange 'ghosting' or 'tracer' effects. Less distortion equals less dizziness equals happier me!

Day 67 - Saturday 12th April 2003

The weekend's here again and I'm considering jumping into my car for a test run around the local area.

Changed my mind. Too much work to do so I'm gonna leave it until tomorrow.

Day 68 - Sunday 13th April 2003

Another lazy Sunday afternoon in front of the box watching the Arsenal vs Sheffield United game. How the referee got away with the blatant rugby tackle on the United player god only knows.

Didn't bother going out for a drive today... will leave it till Monday now.

Day 69 - Monday 14th April 2003

So it's the big day... I'm all ready to get behind the wheel to see if I can handle a drive around the block. I'm up early. I've had a shower, got changed and had a shave. I'm behind the wheel. I've turned the key and, and, and... NOTHING! GUTTED! The bloody battery is flat and I can't even get a fart out of the engine. Arghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

I can't believe this at all. All dressed up and nowhere to go! Hehehee. Best thing is that all my mates are at work and the neighbours are out. Damn.

Eventually a friend came over at around 6.30pm to jump start my car but we had further problems when we couldn't find the battery! The car has got a strange setup where the only visible 'positive' symbol is housed under a small square block at the side of the engine. A quick thumb through the owner's manual showed me how to get it started. Cool.

I drove around the local area and then went to a favourite haunt... McDonalds!! Hehehee. It felt good to be driving again and I had no ill effects when I got home so it's safe to say that another milestone, has been reached. Good job fella!

Day 70 - Tuesday 15th April 2003

Exactly 10 weeks after I started the diary and I am driving; on my feet; not dizzy; have no pains; 90% recovered with the Bells palsy; 95% with my balance; and generally in good spirits.

To dampen my high spirits my car decided not to start again. I managed to get the neighbour to start it with a mains-powered charger and then took it out for a long drive. That should do the trick.
